SUMMARY

Provides mental health services under the supervision of a psychiatrist. Being an important component of the mental health team, their medical know-how allows them to treat patients on an outpatient basis.

Education and/or experience

  • Graduation from an accredited school of medicine
  • Hold current license to practice in state of Virginia
  • Current DEA  certificate
  • Board Certification preferred
  • CPR Certified
  • CAQ for Psychiatry
  • Credentialed per Community Health Center Policies and Procedures for billing services under Medicare/Medicaid

Competencies

  1. Ability to observe, assess and record symptoms, reactions, and progress.
  2. Knowledge of legal and ethical standards for the delivery of medical care.
  3. Knowledge of relevant drugs and non-pharmaceutical patient care aids and ability to prescribe dosages and instruct patients in correct usage.
  4. Knowledge of community medical diagnostic and patient care services in area of medical expertise.
  5. Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirement.
  6. Knowledge of current principles, methods and procedures for the delivery of medical evaluation, diagnosis and treatment in area of expertise.
  7. Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  8. Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops.
  9. Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  10. Effective computer skills (Microsoft Office, EClinical Works and Google).

Clinical

  1. Assesses patients through informal conversation
  2. Reviews patients’ medical, personal, and drug (including substance abuse) histories in order to diagnose and/or rule out any underlying medical conditions
  3. Orders labs, makes referrals to other providers, and prescribes psychiatric medications
  4. Has an expertise in psychopharmacology, the study of indications, actions, risks, and side effects of psychiatric drugs used independently or along with other psychiatric drugs
  5. Oversees patients’ physical and mental health while receiving psychiatric care
  6. Performs frequent follow-ups to monitor how patient is responding to counseling, medications and other therapies
  7. Works with families to ensure that patient is receiving adequate support
  8. Reviews ancillary test results and coordinates notification to the patient as per policy
  9. Completion of appropriate chart documentation within EHR to comply with insurance and reimbursement guidelines
  10. Completion of all required documentation within EHR within a timely manner as per policy
  11. Participates in on-call schedule
  12. Maintains patient confidentiality at all times

 

Medical Administrative

 

  1. Works with other clinical staff to establish clinical protocols and measures.
  2. Follows established agency policies, procedures, and objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards.
  3. As appropriate to the position, participates in specified health promotion, education and/or prevention programs.
  4. Establish, strengthen, and negotiate relationships between the health center and other clinicians, provider organizations and providers in this marketplace.
  5. Maintains appropriate licensure and certification including meeting and/or exceeding CME requirements.
  6. Attends all staff and provider meetings as requested.
  7. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  8. Supports the mission of PATHS.
