DANVILLE, Va. (WSET) — Hundreds of turkeys were given away to those in need on Friday afternoon.

Feeding Southwest Virginia joined with several Danville area partners for the giveaway.

The event was hosted at Dan River Church, where lines stretched across the parking lot.

Each family received a whole turkey along with all the classic trimmings.

This was the second year for this giveaway.

After feeding 80 families last year, organizers realized how great the need was in their community.

"The messages were so powerful. 'We don't have income, we lost our job, COVID has impacted our family and we just want a home-cooked meal.' So to be able to provide that and get hundreds of that information has been so powerful," said Shani Gaylord-Hunter, Director of Community Programs for PATHS.

400 turkeys were given away at Friday's event.

Folks with Danville Community College and the Danville Police Department helped distribute the meals.
